Want to use your computer to perform a certain task but don’t have it handy? Say hello to Samsung DeX: a mini computer that resides in your Samsung Galaxy phone. If that sounds exciting, continue reading to learn more about Samsung DeX and how to use it on your TV.

What Is Samsung DeX?

Samsung DeX is an app that creates an Android desktop computing environment on an external display – such as your PC, monitor, or Smart TV – using just your Samsung Galaxy phone. You can connect to the external display wirelessly or with a cable.

DeX will allow you to access and use all of your phone’s data (apps, settings, files, etc.) on a bigger display – but in a way that mimics the desktop experience of a Windows computer.

You can do almost everything in DeX mode that you can do on a regular PC, such as open multiple apps at the same time, minimize them to a taskbar, drag and drop between the apps, edit photos, watch movies, browse the Internet, and reply to messages.

Samsung DeX runs independently of what’s happening on your phone, which means DeX doesn’t mirror your phone’s display. On the contrary, it creates a new space when connected to the big display. It allows you to continue using your phone as you normally would while your kids watch a movie that’s streaming from your phone to the TV.

Basically, you have a mini-PC in your phone that you can activate anytime. Samsung DeX allows you to get a true second-screen experience to enjoy the benefits of two devices in one.

Samsung DeX Supported Devices

Samsung DeX is a super handy technology, but you must have compatible devices for it to work.

Mobile devices are at the time of writing limited to Samsung flagship phones and tablets launched in 2018 and later:

  • Samsung Galaxy S8, S9, S10, S20, S21, and S22 series.Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Note 9, Note 10, and Note 20 series.Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, S6, S7, and S8.Galaxy Tab Active Pro and Active 3.Galaxy Z Fold, Fold 2, Fold 3, and Fold 4.

As mentioned earlier, you can connect your mobile device to an external display, such as a monitor, TV or PC via an HDMI or USB cable if you want a wired connection. You can also connect using Wi-Fi for a wireless connection without requiring any other accessory.

A DeX wireless connection works with any brand of Smart TV, provided it supports Miracast technology.

DeX for PC is compatible with Windows 10 and above only. Samsung dropped the support for macOS in early 2022, so you will no longer be able to use DeX on Apple computers.
