A new video just emerged from the Xbox One design team that shows how the upcoming “all-in-one entertainment system” came to be. The clip released in YouTube is about six minutes long and highlights all the effort and knowledge that went into the design of the new Xbox.

The video game console was based on 13 years of experience, looking back the original Xbox, Xbox 360 and it is also based in the new Windows 8 tile user-interface — Microsoft explains.

It’s rectangular in purpose to reflect what’s happening on the screen

From the beginning the software giant wanted the new console to be simple and appealing for gaming and entertainment. The design team literally went through hundreds of mockups before the new “liquid black” box that follows a 16:9 aspect ratio evolved to the device you see today.

Looks like Microsoft had to create a video explaining why this rectangular shape on Xbox One, after the initial impression from many was that the new console looks pretty similar to a TiVo set-top box or a large VCR. But as you see in the video the company points out many details on the design decision.

What do you think about the Xbox One design?
