Windows 10 is the operating system that brings an updated user-interface and brand new features, but it still includes old features including Control Panel and File Explorer.
While we already know that Control Panel will be replaced by the Settings app, File Explorer remains with the same user-interface since Windows 95. Of course, throughout the years Microsoft has updated File Explorer many times and it has also changed names, but changes haven’t been significant.
Microsoft now finally reveals that is working on a new File Explorer for Windows 10, which it’s likely to be introduced in the coming months.
Peter Skillman from Microsoft made the announcement on Twitter saying that the software giant is working on a “total update of File Explorer.”

He also replied to a question about adding tabs to File Explorer to what he responded that tabs is a highlight requested feature that has a “potential to drive a task based” operating system, suggesting that Microsoft is considering to add the feature to the new File Explorer for Windows 10.

At this point in time that’s all the information available. We don’t have any further details release date or implementation plans.
However, we could assume that the company will release the new File Explorer and keep the old version for the time being for a transition period, the same it’s doing with Control Panel and the Settings app.
