Beginning in Windows 10 build 10074, Microsoft is bringing the blur effect from Windows 7’s Aero Glass back to Windows 10. However, many Insiders will notice, after installing the latest build, that the blur effect will be enable on the Start menu or taskbar.

There could be a lot reasons why during the installation the Aero Glass like effect isn’t appearing, but according to a Reddit user, there is a tweak to enable the blur effect on any computer, and it includes modifying the registry.

Enable Start menu blur

  • Open the Start menu, do a search for regedit, press Enter, and launch the registry as an administrator.
    1. Navigate the following path:
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\themes\personalize
  • Double-click EnableBlurBehind and set the value to 1.
  • Sign out and sign back in or restart your PC to see the blur effect.

That’s all there is to it.

Open the Start menu, do a search for regedit, press Enter, and launch the registry as an administrator.

  1. Navigate the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\themes\personalize

Double-click EnableBlurBehind and set the value to 1.

Sign out and sign back in or restart your PC to see the blur effect.
