New Windows 8.1 Update 1 leak screenshots, from the one and only WZor, show that Windows 8.1 (build 9600.16606) is going backwards, instead of Microsoft embracing the new Metro UI, the new tweaks make Windows boot straight to desktop bypassing the Start screen. Although, this is something many users have complained in the past, the company added an option to boot-to-desktop in Windows 8.1, but it was an opt-in configuration.

Also one of the new Windows 8.1 Update 1 screenshot shows that Microsoft finally added the Sleep, Shut down, and Restart options to the new power management button that appears in the Start screen next to the username’s picture profile and to the left of new search button.

Finally and perhaps the most noticeable change currently in Windows 8.1 Update 1 is that now Metro-style apps feature a new black bar at the top, showcasing a minimize and close button on the right, in the center you can read the name of the app you are in, and in the top-left corner of the screen you can now see an icon of the app that you can click to invoke various options such as: Split Left, Split right, Minimize, Maximize, and Close, just like in regular desktop apps.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is set to launch on March 11, but all the changes we’re learning today can always change before shipping the final product. Windows 9, on the other hand, will go even further to make the operating system more productive and easier to use, and it’s set to release in April 2015 (although, there are rumors that say we could see a Windows 9 RTM release by October 2014).

Update: WZor recently Tweeted a new screenshot of “Update 1” that highlights new scaling options.
