A second update for Windows 8.1 is coming on August 12th as part of the monthly Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday, but it seems this update won’t be as important as we thought it would.
According to a new report from ZDNet, the tech giant will release Windows 8.1 update 2 as part of their Patch Tuesday, which the company simply refers as “August update”. It’ll contain bug fixes and a few minor design changes, but it won’t contain previous released updates unlike Windows 8.1 Update and won’t be a mandatory update unlike the previous big update.
The second update for the operating system was originally planned to be a significant update, which among other changes was supposed to include the new Start Menu. However the company ditched the plan and later announced that the new menu and many other will be part of Windows 9 and still on track to release on spring 2015.
According to the same report, Microsoft is not expected to release a third update for Windows 8.1 this year either, instead the company will focus efforts to make a better next version of Windows, but it will keep releasing Patch Tuesday updates to continue improving the operating system until the release of Windows Threshold in 2015.
We previous heard the rumor of Microsoft making Windows 9 free for current Windows 8 and Windows 7 users, but it’s also possible Windows XP and Windows Vista users will get some sort of deal in order to help customers to move the latest version of the software.
