Recently Microsoft released Windows Phone 8.1 as a preview, meaning that it is still a work in progress, but this week Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president and manager for Windows Phone Program, has announced at his Reddit AMA that the team is also building a File Manager for Windows Phone 8.1 — a highly requested feature among customers.

Joe confirmed the news during an specific questions at his Reddit AMA:

“*** YES *** We are doing a File Manager for WP8.1! I know a LOT of you are looking for this (thanks for the tweets, I’ve read them all). In fact, I’ve been running a build of it on two of my phones for the last week or so and it’s getting to pretty good shape.”

Not only he confirmed the Windows Phone 8.1 File Manager is coming, but also he shared a couple screenshots of how the feature works right now on a private release of the software. The images that Joe Belfiore shared show that users will have the option to search and create folders, and the ability for users to move folder to an external SD card.

There isn’t a specific time to when the File Manager will be released for Windows Phone 8.1, but Belfiore said it will be sometime before the end of May.
