The Microsoft Research is always working on innovating projects, this time the team is showing off a 3D Touch technology that can be integrated into phones. The video uploaded to YouTube demos a Windows Phone that can be controlled by hovering gestures above the screen.
3D Touch works with an off-the-shelf sensing chip that interacts with the custom electrode array to register movements above the screen and software created by the Microsoft Research team can understand and figure out what each hand gestures mean and is trying to do, such as swiping, manipulating 3D objects, going up and down, and more.
There has been rumors that this 3D Touch technology could debut in the next update for Windows Phone. Even more, the 3D sensing technology it said to come built in the new Lumia McLaren device. However the video shows that the technology still under development, as such it could take a while before we see these technology on Windows Phones.
Update: Microsoft has abandoned this project as part of company restructuring.
