The September system update for Xbox One is rolling out to consoles today bringing new improvements focused on TV integration, a new media player app, and updated SmartGlass app for all platforms. The automatic Xbox One September update includes new option to boot straight to TV, a new live TV mini guide, and Microsoft is expanding OneGuide TV guide to Mexico, Brazil, Ireland, and Austria.
One of the highlights for September’s update is the release of the media player app that Microsoft promised a while back. Starting today Xbox One consoles can play a variety of files from USB devices including video, music, and photo. And the best part is that Microsoft is supporting a bunch of codecs to play many file formats. Though the company said it’s bringing support for MKV and GIFs by the end the year. DLNA is also another functionality for the Xbox One media player but playback support is also delayed until the end of the year.
The SmartGlass app for Windows, iOS, and Android is also receiving an update this week. In this update one of the most noticeable feature is that now users can record Xbox One game clips directly from the application, which makes the process a bit easier and helps those users who bought the console without the Kinect sensor.
Also in the app you can now view your activity feed, post updates and continue threaded messages. Even more, the new update also add the ability to stream live TV to devices supporting SmartGlass, but remember that you’ll need the new digital TV tuner that sadly isn’t yet available in U.S..
September Xbox One system update also adds improvements to Party and now users can easily remove people and see the status of friends activity in the party. The voice command “Xbox One” has also been added for Canada (French), Mexico, Spain, Italy, and Australia.
