Recently, Microsoft confirmed that will stop shipping Windows Media Center in Windows 10. However, it seems that the main feature offered by the software will be coming soon to Xbox One.
According to Thurrott.com, the software maker is planning to bring the TV recording functionality to Xbox One and it could happen as soon as later this year.
Initially, the company said that Xbox One was designed to be an all-in-one entertainment device. As such, the news shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as Xbox One already supports live TV in North America and Europe for the game console, and adding a full DVR capability is the next right thing to do.
The only issue is the storage capacity. Xbox One comes built-in with limited storage, a library of 17-22 games will fill the 500GB hard drive very quickly and adding TV recording to the mix makes the console no too ideal as a DVR. Perhaps, Microsoft is also planning to upgrade the hard drive in new consoles to overcome this limitation, or may be simply adding an external USB hard drive is the solution at hand.
Also, it will be interesting to see how live TV recording works when playing games, considering that recording live TV streaming uses a fairly amount of system resources.
Microsoft released the first version of Windows Media Center in 2002 as an extension of Windows XP, which required specific hardware. The software evolved and it was included in Windows Vista and Windows 7. Windows 8 also included an unchanged version of Windows Media Center, and even though Microsoft is killing the software in Windows 10, all efforts suggests that Microsoft is not ignoring those who love to watch entertainment in the big screen.
