Get ready for better picture quality on the Xbox Series X and S.
Dolby Vision is headed to the Xbox Series X and S for members of the Insider program. The Verge reports that Microsoft claims the HDR format will mean brighter highlights, sharper contrast, and more vibrant colors when used on a Dolby Vision-compatible TV.
The HDR feature is currently only available to members of the Xbox Insider Alpha ring because it’s still in testing before general release. Dolby previously has said that the Xbox Series X and Series S will be the first-ever games consoles to support both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos surround sound in games.
“Current Xbox One consoles support HDR10 and Dolby Vision for apps, but gaming support is limited to basic HDR10,” the company said on its website. “Xbox Series X and Series S will be the first consoles to support the Dolby Vision HDR format with dynamic metadata for gaming.”
Forbes reported in March that Dolby Vision gaming was enabled in an Xbox Insider Alpha ring release for a few games, including Borderlands 3, Gears 5, and Halo: Master Chief Collection.
Dolby touts the new technology as offering “stunning picture quality.”
“Experience a remarkable color palette, sharper contrasts, and incredible brightness that feel more like looking through a window than at a screen,” the company writes on its website. “This is HDR like you’ve never seen it before.”
Dolby Vision also should be easier to configure for users. “Dolby Vision games automatically map to any display with Dolby Vision, you’re always seeing the best possible picture available,” Microsoft said. “This means…no more sliders to adjust your picture settings.” However, the company said that testers might need to update their TV’s firmware to take full advantage of the technology.
