Originally, the Surface Laptop only came preloaded with Windows 10 S, which is a variant of the OS optimized for performance, battery life, and limited to Microsoft Store apps. However, it now appears (via Neowin) that Microsoft is giving consumers the option to buy the device with Windows 10 Pro without the need to upgrade.

The new option is available through its commercial store, but anyone can purchase the laptop with the new option.

The only caveat is that it’ll cost you an extra $100 from choosing Windows 10 Pro over Windows 10 S. If you want to avoid paying more money, you can still purchase the Surface Laptop with Windows 10 S, and then take advantage of the free limited time upgrade offer to Windows 10 Pro.

Other than the new option to select a different variant of Windows 10, the Surface Laptop you’re getting is exactly the same as the one running Windows 10 S. You’re still getting an Intel seventh-generation processor, up to 16GB of memory, up to one terabyte of storage, and an Alcantara covered keyboard.
