Google has begun contacting some YouTube TV subscribers about a TiVo Stream 4K giveaway, which some speculate is a response to the company’s current feud with Roku.
This promotion, discovered by 9to5Google, gives YouTube TV subscribers the option of getting their hands on the normally $40 TiVo or $50 Chromecast devices for free, though, as 9to5Google notes, Google has given away Chromecast with Google TV in the past. It currently is unclear if this promotion will be available to all YouTube TV subscribers or a select number. YouTube TV subscribers who have been selected receive an email that includes a unique code for use at the TiVo Store.
The TiVo Stream 4K features Google Assistant, a voice remote control, support for 4K UHD, Dolby Vision HDR, Dolby Atmos, and offers built-in Chromecast. It also supports a number of streaming apps, such as Neflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, Showtime, Peacock, and more. It normally retails for $39.99, but is currently on sale for $29.99 for those who might not be able to take advantage of the current promotion.
There is speculation that Google’s decision to run this promotion may involve its ongoing dispute with Roku, which began at the end of April when Roku dropped YouTube TV. Roku claims Google was making unreasonable demands and intentionally manipulating search results, while Google has accused Roku of demanding “special treatment” and acting like a bully. One theory is that this promotion could be an act of retaliation against Roku for blocking the YouTube TV app.
